Building Block Vitamins

There are some vitamins that are just the basic building blocks of good health.  Vitamins A,C, and E have to fit in that category.  These are the work-horses of the vitamin stable.  They are the antioxidant vitamins that boost your health.  Many common foods are good sources of these vitamins, and they help to promote physical well-being.

How do antioxidant vitamins boost health?

Many foods have antioxidant properties. However, there are specific vitamins that are known as antioxidant vitamins. They include vitamin A -- retinol and the carotenoids -- vitamin C, and vitamin E. These antioxidant vitamins appear to play a role in the body's cell-protection system by neutralising highly reactive and unstable molecules, called free radicals.

Free radicals  disrupt and tear apart vital cell structures like cell membranes. Antioxidants tie up these free radicals and take away their destructive power. That may reduce the risk of chronic illness and slow down the ageing process. Some researchers also believe that antioxidants might help boost immune function when a system is under stress.

Vitamin A- beta-carotene and retinols found in foods is converted to vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A assists, builds,  and strengthens bones, soft tissue, skin, and mucous membranes. .

Food sources of beta-carotene include apricots, broccoli, cantaloupe, carrots, kale, papaya, peach, pumpkin, red peppers, liver, beef, chicken, eggs, whole milk, sweet potatoes, and spinach. 

Deficiency in vitamin A may cause: 
Reduced night vision
Night blindness
Dry eyes
Eye inflammation
Corneal inflammation
Rough skin
Dry skin
Vulnerability to respiratory infection
Vulnerability to urinary infection
Growth retardation in children

Vitamin C- ascorbic acid aids in wound healing and plays a role in the formation of red blood cells. Vitamin C also boosts levels of the brain chemical noradrenaline, a neurotransmitter that boosts alertness and increases concentration. Levels of ascorbic acid decline when the body is under great stress or during the aging process.
Food sources of vitamin C include broccoli, brussel sprouts, cantelope, grapefruit and grapefruit juice, guave, kiwi, oranges, green pepper, potato, red peppers, strawberries, and tomato. 

Deficiencies in Vitamin C may cause:
Swollen gums

Vitamin E-  tocopherol plays a key role in the formation of red blood cells and in the maintenance of cell membranes. Vitamin E may slow age-related changes in the body. Adults with intestinal disorders of malabsorption may be deficient in vitamin E. 

Food sources of vitamin E include almonds, avocados, fortified cereals, corn oil, cod-liver oil, flax seed, hazelnuts, peanut butter, safflower oil, sunflower seeds, turnip greens, tomatoes, and wheat germ.

Deficiencies in Vitamin E may cause:
impaired balance
poor coordination
age spots
decreased sex drive
Although many common foods have these basic vitamins in them, it may be necessary to supplement your vitamin intake to maintain good daily health.  Consider finding and taking a good Women Vitamins for your best health.
